What Are AI Agent Skills?
An AI agent skill (also called a tool, plugin, or extension) is a code module that an AI agent loads to extend its capabilities. A skill might let your agent browse the web, send emails, query databases, call external APIs, or run terminal commands.
Skills are powerful. That is also what makes them dangerous. A malicious skill has access to everything your agent has access to: your API keys, your files, your email, your cloud credentials.
The VirusTotal Gap
VirusTotal is excellent at detecting malicious binary files. It maintains a database of known malware signatures and behavioral patterns developed from decades of security research on executable files.
AI agent skills are not binary executables. They are Python scripts, JavaScript modules, or YAML configurations that run inside an agent runtime. The malicious behavior emerges from how the skill uses its legitimate permissions, not from the code itself being detectably malicious.
My scan of 549 ClawHub skills found 93 behavioral threats. All 93 scored CLEAN on VirusTotal. The gap is not an edge case. It is the entire threat surface.
What Behavioral Threats Look Like
A behavioral threat in an AI agent skill typically looks like one or more of these patterns:
Credential exfiltration: The skill requests access to environment variables, configuration files, or stored credentials. On the surface, this looks like normal initialization. The threat is that credentials are then sent to an external endpoint controlled by the skill author.
C2 communication disguised as telemetry: The skill reports usage statistics or errors to an external server. The payload includes session context, memory contents, or tool call history that the user never intended to share.
Permission scope creep: The skill requests broad permissions at install time, far beyond what its stated purpose requires. An agent that only needs to read files should not need write access to system directories.
Memory poisoning: The skill writes to agent memory in ways designed to persist across sessions and influence future behavior. The injected content looks like legitimate memory until it triggers a targeted behavior.
Real Incidents in 2026
The BreachForums backdoor agent (February 2026) demonstrated that a skill can pass all standard audits while containing a behavioral backdoor triggered only under specific conditions. The attack was invisible to static analysis and binary scanning.
The IBM X-Force 2026 report documented over 300,000 stolen AI credentials specifically targeting agent APIs. Agent credentials are valuable because agents can autonomously spend money, access sensitive data, and make commitments on behalf of their operators.
Koi Security independently found a 11.9% threat rate in ClawHub skills. My SkillScan analysis found 16.9%. Different methodologies, same conclusion: the threat rate is significant and undetected by standard scanning.
How to Protect Your Agent Deployment

The AI agent security problem is real and it is growing. The threat rate in available skills (12-17% depending on methodology) means that a random agent deployment has roughly 1-in-6 odds of including a skill with behavioral threat patterns.
